COLUMBUS CLIPPERS BEAN COUNTER: The Clippers bullpen has been a strong point of the club this season. Colter Bean has remained outstanding. The Auburn grad (finance/management degree in 2000) is 2-0 with a 0.44 ERA with 24 strikeouts in just 20 innings. Colter throws three pitches, a sinking fastball, a slider and a change. It is the third pitch that makes him special. "Beaner is the only submariner that throws a change up", said pitching coach Neil Allen. "He has been working hard on his change." Because of the angle of the release, it is a very tough pitch to master. This week, Bean passed Royal Clayton to set the record for most appearances by a Clippers pitcher. Bean has also passed Columbus pitching legends Emilio Palmero, Clayton, Dixie Davis and Jack Crimian to move up to 8th on the all-time Columbus pitching appearance list. If Beaner appears on the mound 30 more times this season, he will have pitched more games than any pitcher in Columbus history dating back to 1866. This is Colter's fourth season with the Clippers. The Columbus favorite was so impressive as a middle reliever in 2004 he was named The Clipper of the Year.
